From February 2016, under the Food Safety & Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013, fines for commercial premises with a pest problem are now calculated considering a company's turnover, culpability and the potential harm, either actual or risk of harm.
For large organisations with a turnover exceeding £50,000,000, fines can be from £100 - £3,000,000. For small firms with a turnover less than £2,000,000 though fines can still be up to £120,000.
There have been various cases in the past 18 months or so, where large fines have been imposed, for pest infestation issues. For example:
Supermarket in Bromborough was fined £700,000 in August 2016.
A supermarket in Park Royal was fined £664,000 in November 2016.
Health food Retailer in Knightsbridge, fined £500,000 in February 2017.
There are many others.
