They are literally covered, and contain many germs - bacteria etc...

One minute they're eating from animal waste outside. The next minute they've flown in your building and landed on your lunch. Or perhaps they are feeding from the toilet brush, and then landing on your cup.

Flies can breed very quickly, and they are one of very few pests that feed from both foul and food - spreading foul germs. They are often the reason we get a stomach upset, especially in hot countries - but as we all know there are plenty of flies here in the UK as well.
