Now the nights are longer, and it's getting colder rats look for warmth. They are looking for warmth - now the summer has gone, and they've reached their maximum numbers, having bred all spring and summer.

Especially if you are hearing noises, or something was chewed or moved indoors. They may already be inside, in a cavity somewhere. You don't want your wires or pipes damaged, or for them to explore more of your home, searching for food.
